Dear guests!

I worked for the tourist office in Millstatt for four years, so I know the region very well. On this page I would like to share with you some of my insider tips for the perfect vacation in Haus Fernblick and thus in our beautiful region.

TIP:
Winter holiday
Off to the
Snow

Spittal is only 20 minutes away by car.

From there, the cable car goes up to the Goldeck, where skiers and snowboarders will find a ski area with 25 kilometers of slopes that is often snow-sure until April.

A total of 5 lifts take winter sports fans from 550m up to 2,145m.

Sports experts love the Goldeck Snowpark and the 50-hectare freeride area.

But beginners in skiing will also enjoy the perfectly groomed slopes. Goldeck is a ski area for all ski enthusiasts .

TIP:
Gmünd and Malta Valley

We start in Gmünd , which is actually worth more than a whole day visit. Walking through this lovely little town gives every visitor the feeling of traveling back in time more than once.

Gmünd is an artists' town

Gmünd is an artists' town with many small and large surprises and offers insights into many studios where the artists are actively at work There is art on every street corner and you feel as if you have been transported back to the Middle Ages - and that's true, because Gmünd is one of the oldest towns in Austria , having been granted city rights in 1346. The streets and squares have lost none of their traditional atmosphere.

Museum in the City Tower

The town tower houses a museum that regularly exhibits works by world-famous artists that change every year. Works by Picasso, Miró and Dürrer could already be admired in Gmünd, and in 2022 works by the important artist and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian could be viewed. She loved butterflies and flowers, which she painted true to life in artistically original compositions.

In 2024 , paintings by Marc Chagall , who created a highly individual life's work with his unmistakable colorfulness, can be admired in the Stadtturmgalerie.

Art and culinary delights in the castle

In, around and in front of the old castle you will find many works of art , but inside you will find above all culinary delights.

And of course, from the castle you have a beautiful view of Gmünd.

House of Wonder

Anyone who is interested in science and wants to learn about physics in a different way should definitely go to Pankratium . The House of Wonder introduces children in particular (but also curious adults) to the magic of physics in a playful way.

Fast cars

Gmünd has even more to offer - Porsche fans, for example, can go to the Porsche Museum - the largest private Porsche museum shows the most beautiful old and new models.

So Gmünd is worth much more than just a quick visit.

The lush green Malta Valley!

From Gmünd you drive into the Maltatal. A lush green, quiet, natural valley with picturesque little villages that make for beautiful photo opportunities .

The Fallbach is particularly beautiful - a waterfall that, with a free fall of 120 meters, is the deepest free-falling waterfall in Carinthia .

There is a climbing wall here for experienced climbers.

Marvel and enjoy is the order of the day for those who do not want to or cannot climb.

On sunny days, the rainbow appears in the mystical spray from the waterfall - this makes a unique photo opportunity.

Fallbach Adventure Park

At the waterfall there is an adventure park dedicated to the theme of water .

In addition to a viewing platform, there is also a climbing garden and water labyrinths to play in . You can dip your feet in them to cool off on hot days.

Roaring waterfalls and a winding road: the Maltatal ends at the Maltahochalm Straße. Accompanied by many, sometimes gorgeously roaring waterfalls, you drive a 14.4 km long, winding, impressively beautiful alpine road up to the Kölnbreinsperre .

This road was built in order to be able to build this dam - it is now one of the most popular Alpine roads in Austria. Austria's highest dam is an architectural masterpiece. At 200 m high and 626 m wide, the Kölnbrein Dam is the largest dam in Austria. Energy for thousands of households is generated here.

Technology and history

Are you curious about the technology in this dam? Then you can book a guided tour and go INSIDE the wall. This is a fenomenal experience.

If you prefer to watch the film about the development of the wall and the reservoir, you can do so in the "VERBUND Energy World Malta" exhibition on the history of the dam construction in the Malta mountain hotel. The road was built into the rocks - in the process, fantastically beautiful crystals and other (semi-)precious stones were found - these are also on display in the exhibition. They are all there to touch and admire.

Observation deck

There is a viewing platform on the dam wall where you can imagine yourself in free fall along the wall.

If you really want to experience the feeling of free fall for real, you can also try a bungee jump up here...

But this must be booked here in advance.

For me personally, the trip to the Kölnbrein Dam is an annual "must". I can't get enough of the impressive dam and nature, the breathtaking landscape, the sparkling fresh air and the peace and quiet up here and I enjoy it at least twice a year, and I really deeply enjoy it!
